Happy Mother's Day to All Mothers

This is my mother, and a wonderful, wonderful mother. Mostly, I know her as a great mother, an English teacher, and someone who loved learning, reading, animals and especially horses, any stranger, traveling, and a stellar example of someone who loves the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She also loved Dad and taught us all how it was done by her actions. She treated her own parents with such respect and tenderness. She was the BEST grandmother, and loved her nieces and nephews, too. In honor of you, I am going to make your famous homemade noodles tomorrow for Mother's Day...

The Faculty Dress Code Rebel

Here is a picture of my mother in the 1971 Red Bluff High School yearbook. They did a feature story on her because she bucked the system.... She tells the story in her journal:
"One day, I just chose to wear a pant suit... it was a very nice cream colored knit pantsuit.... I didn't think it would cause the stir that it did, but apparently there was a faculty dress code forbidding teachers from wearing pants, and I found myself in the middle of a district-wide uproar.... soon afterward, there was a vote and the school board allowed a few more freedoms. I'm not the type to cause problems, I just wanted to wear pants that day. I never intended to be a rebel."

Here's from the yearbook:

More 'Mother's Day' pictures

This is such a great picture. Mother was in Florida while Dad was in Officer's training School.. Probably about 1944? The best part about this pic is the woman looking back at her. Just what is she thinking?

Happy Mother's Day, Mom

These are some early pictures of my mom, but I love them. I love her.. miss her...

And the Winner is.. Super Saver!

SUPER SAVER wins the
Kentucky Derby 2010

None of the four horses I bet on (okay, I really don't bet) even came close. My scientific method of choosing winners has got to change... I usually use a combination of favorite horse names, best looking horses (I always favor the bays), betting odds, and past purse winners.....I completely forgot to consider the jockey! If I had know Calvin Borell was riding Super Saver, I would have won for sure! He did the same thing as last year ...and won...on Mine That Bird... he came from WAAAAY behind and rode the rail... I LOVE this jockey.

The Kentucky Derby

Want to know something about me you never knew? I am a freak about The Kentucky Derby! I NEVER miss it and know almost everything about it! Every first Saturday in May (tomorrow at 4:00) those high spirited 3 year old gorgeous, swift, and shiny horse Run for the Roses. And every year I sit in front of my T.V. hollering and making way too much noise... wearing my fashionable ladies' hat....here's a good one......
And I cheer on my favorite. This year I am cheering for Lookin at Lucky. 2-1 odds My other favorite horse is Dean's Kitten, though it has a 40-1 chance... also, Devil May Care.... I should come back in my next life as a stable groom or jockey.... ummm love the smell of stables and a having a worn curry brush in my hands. And they're off! Here are the horses running this year.. Don't you love their names?
Here's Churchill Downs........ just after the patrons rise and sing "My Old Kentucky Home"....a 2 minute race.........I also REALLY like the horse Discreetly Mine....wish me luck... (last year's race was the MOST EXCITING I had ever seen!)

My visit to the Midwest

Monday, April 26, 2010

When I arrived in Minnesota, the girls had a special greeting for their grandma.. a banner...
Macy is such a great helper. Steve and Melissa have sure taught those girls to work. Kami helps, too, when she gets home from school.

Macy unloads the dishwasher.. and knows where everything goes.

Dinosaurs stealing their french fries ...he he he .... Macy is horrified

Now a little blood for refreshment.

I just got back from Minnesota, spending time with my dar'lins... I took Macy and Kami out to McDonald's and we had fun with the dinosaurs from the kid's meal....

BYU BALLROOM DANCE COMPANY

When we lived in Yuba City, the highlight and absolutely BEST cultural event of the year was to get tickets to the BYU Ballroom Dancers' show and Especially great was to house the dancers at our home..... So Gary surprised me last week by getting us tickets to the show at the Marriott Center.... at some moments we were only ten feet away from the dancers..... COULD NOT BELIEVE our great seats... ON THE FLOOR, second row, and I sat next to the honorees of the night, Linda and Lee Wakefield... who have been directors for 35 years or so. This night was the 50th year anniversary of the BYU Ballroom Dancers... they even had about 300 of the OLD ones come out and dance.... After the GREAT show, I talked with Linda and Lee Wakefield.... one of my girlfriends from Deseret Towers in '72 was Jan Gaub, Lee's partner for many years... So good to get an update from him about her. Here is my favorite clip from the night... The Pirates of the Caribbean... MUST SEE... I'm pretty sure I saw Johnny Depp twirling on the dance floor..

Book: The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Don’t let the juvenile cover deceive you ... it is a very DEEP book. It is right up there with The Prophet by Khalil Gibran.

Good reading….. Anne

Call/Barlow Cousins 1956

This picture is a classic... here we are all squished onto the top bunk in the basement of my house in Roosevelt, Utah. Just to the left, out of sight, was Mother's darkroom..she was always taking pictures... in fact she had a little business called Call's Studio....these kidlets are the scions of Richard and Elizabeth at least to the point in 1956... from left:
Deborah, Betsy, Rebecca, Dayton, Anne, David, Jr., and Brad. It was a scream when we all got together. The folks would call us 'Wild Hooligans'... and the rampage started all over again when both our families relocated to California. and we know California has never been the same since.

Brad and Larisa Call

This is my brother Brad and his beautiful wife, Larisa. Isn't it a great picture? I took it at the Oakland Temple a few years ago. They have 6 kids. He farms 200 acres of walnuts and prunes north of Red Bluff. It's always good to have a farmer in the family....man of the land...works with his hands. He can make, built, grow, repair, or create anything.

Richard and Kate Call

Here is my brother Dayton's family at Disneyland just before his son was married. Richard and Kate were married last month. They both graduated from BYU and after an internship at a New York advertising company, he was offered a job. He's been there several years. She's from Seattle..... Welcome!

Weber Morgan Health Department

It's now been 7 years since Gary was hired to come to Weber County to: reorganize the health department...bring 5 clinics under one roof...and build a new building. He's done an awesome job. Here are some pictures of the new building...and I must say, it is one of the classiest buildings in downtown Ogden. Also, he started up a quarterly health magazine.

Betsy Barlow Ricks

This is my sister Betsy....we're the same age.....ok.. she's really my cousin but if I HAD a sister she would be the best sister ever. Besty lives in Scarsdale, New York with her husband Tim. They have raised 6 utterly fantastic kids. She is loyal, fun, funny, pretty, a true leader, a trained vocalist, faithful to a fault, smart...but hopelessly naive and gullible... and she always makes me feel loved. We truly grew up together... with me spending summers at her house in Redwood City... and her spending weeks with me in Red Bluff and Whiskeytown Lake. We caused mischief together and even got spankings together. We always got poison oak together. We were at cheerleading camp together... we created secret words and phrases..we laughed and shared secrets and talked about boys in that teeny bouncy 100year-old bed at Grandma's... I was there when she got her first kiss (actually, I arranged it)... I told her about the facts-of-life when she was 9 (she didn't believe me)... we went to BYU together, we were in the same dorm together, and we went to Europe our junior year of college together. We got engaged, married, and had our first daughters within months of each other...I love my Betsy!

Immaculee Ilibagiza

I don't know when I have been so touched by a book. I recommend this to everyone.. I could NOT PUT IT DOWN... This is our book club selection for this month. I can't believe I didn't know about this horrible situation.. just 15 years ago... WHERE WAS AMERICA? In just 3 mos., 1 million Tutsi were murdered...slaughtered... ImmaculĂ©e shares her miraculous story of how she survived during the Rwanda genocide in 1994 when she and seven other women huddled silently together in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor’s house for 91 days! In this captivating and inspiring book, ImmaculĂ©e shows us how to embrace the power of prayer, forge a profound and lasting relationship with God, and discover the importance of forgiveness and the meaning of truly unconditional love and understanding—through our darkest hours. Read it and report back!
